The South Dakota Democratic Party believes Rep. Marc Feinstein doesn’t care about Sioux Falls homeowners. They believe the same about Sen. Angie Buhl, and Rep. Susy Blake, and Rep. Patrick Kirschman.
That’s the only way to read this postcard they’ve sent out attacking District 12 Reps. Manny Steele and Hal Wick. (See: previous.) The ad, posted above, says Steele and Wick voted “to RAISE the property taxes on your home,” and suggests that means “they are just out of touch with the real problems of Sioux Falls” and “don’t understand that Sioux Falls citizens are tired of paying property taxes and want LOWER, not HIGHER property taxes.”
The ad cites this year’s SB49, which adjusted property tax rates for school districts. It’s an adjustment the Legislature makes every year, and is called the “Cutler-Gabriel” adjustment, to adjust taxes to keep the percentage of education funding provided by the state constant.
It’s true that Steele and Wick voted for the bill.
So did 99 other legislators, including every single Democrat in the Legislature.
Only four people didn’t vote for SB49: Sen. Shantel Krebs was excused from the Senate vote, where it passed 34-0, and three conservative Republicans voted no in the 67-3 House vote: Reps. Stace Nelson, Phil Jensen and Lance Russell.
Perhaps the words of a famous Democrat apply here: “It takes some brass to attack a guy for doing what you did.”
Reminder: I’m looking for political postcards, especially attack postcards, from any South Dakota party or candidate. So far all I’ve gotten are District 12 stuff, and I know there’s more postcards flying around. If you’re getting them, email or send them to me at the Argus Leader, 200 S. Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104. I won’t identify the people who send me the postcards (unless you want to be identified).
