Then-Gov. Mike Rounds backed his then-lieutenant Dennis Daugaard to the hilt in the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary, and the two have stayed close as Rounds has moved toward a Senate run. In September I reported that Rounds and Daugaard had had frequent conversations on the subject.
That’s still true. I was interviewing Daugaard yesterday for an unrelated story when the Rounds announcement came out, and asked him about it.
“I went hunting with Gov. Rounds over Thanksgiving weekend,” Daugaard said. “We had some conversations about his plans for Thursday.”
It’ll be interesting if any members of Daugaard’s inner circle — some of whom used to work for Rounds — move over to Rounds’ new campaign.
