Argus Leader sports editor Stu Whitney has news at the intersection of sports and politics: the gym in the town of Murdo will on Friday be renamed the Harold Thune Auditorium.
Harold Thune, of course, is the nonagenarian father of South Dakota’s Sen. John Thune.
Murdo has been Harold Thune’s home since 1930, when he was 11 years old. He was a basketball standout at Murdo, and cultivated a love of the sport in his son John, who was also a hoops star in Murdo.
After school, Harold Thune served as a fighter pilot in World War II, and later served as a football and basketball coach in Murdo.
He’s now 93 years old.
