Reading day at the Capitol: Pierre-area schoolchildren came by the first floor of the Capitol Tuesday morning to hear stories from First Lady Linda Daugaard and two state political leaders: House Assistant Majority Leader Justin Cronin and House Minority Leader Bernie Hunhoff.

Daugaard, who has spent the past two years reading to children all over the state as part of her pro-reading initiative, got her group of young children counting along with the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Cronin read “Leo the Late Bloomer,” while Hunhoff broke out “The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear.”

Feel free to read any of these choices as metaphorical.
