The less-controversial of the two abortion bills scheduled to be heard by a House committee today was withdrawn by its sponsor.
Rep. Jon Hansen, R-Dell Rapids, asked the committee to table House Bill 1236, which would have prevented “wrongful birth” lawsuits where a couple sues a doctor for not giving them information about their unborn child’s health that would have led them to abort the pregnancy.
Hansen said South Dakota has certain outdated statutes on the wall that partially address the situation.
He said anti-abortion advocates will “study this issue to see if there’s anything that needs to happen within our existing statutes to further make sure that situations like this cannot happen in South Dakota.”
The issue could return in future years depending on that research, Hansen said.
House Bill 1237, a revision of South Dakota’s pre-abortion waiting period, is still scheduled to be heard today.
