Report: Former state fire chief to run for governor as Democrat

Cory Heidelberger at the Madville Times is reporting that Joe Lowe, the retired director of the South Dakota Division of Wildland Fire Suppression, will run for governor as a Democrat.

Lowe was a career firefighter and emergency responder, according to the announcement of his retirement from his state position. He moved to South Dakota in 2001 to head South Dakota’s fire response efforts.

According to the biography Lowe provided Heidelberger, he was previously the mayor of Mission Viejo, a 93,000-person city in California.

In his statement, Lowe cites low teacher pay, government transparency and wages as among areas where South Dakota “can do better.”

He doesn’t criticize Daugaard by name in the announcement.

I was unable to reach Lowe Saturday evening to confirm the report.

Late Saturday night Lowe emailed to confirm Heidelberger’s report.

Lowe lives in Piedmont and runs an art gallery in Rapid City.
